Day 30

“Thea, why do your pastel chalks stick?,” the little son of a friend asks me. Sticky??? My pastels? Whatever the mother puts in the child’s food… she should stop it.

“What do you mean?” I ask anyway. “Well, look! When I run the magnet over here, the blue chalk jumps out of the box!”. No sooner said than done. And it’s true: whenever he drives over the blue and purple chalks with the magnet, they “jump” at the magnet as if by magic.

I am fascinated and of course I must ask Wiki immediately. It then says that Prussian Blue, for example, is made from an iron mixture. And that is, as every little nipper knows, magnetic. Aha! Learned something today!

«Thea, warum kleben deine Pastellkreiden?,» fragt mich der kleine Sohn einer Freundin. Kleben??? Meine Pastelle? Was auch immer die Mutter dem Kind ins Essen gibt….sie sollte damit aufhören!

«Wie meinst du das?» frage ich dennoch. «Na, guck mal! Wenn ich hier mit dem Magneten drüberfahre, dann hüpft die blaue Kreide aus der Schachtel!». Gesagt getan. Und es stimmt: immer, wenn er mit dem Magneten über die blauen und lila Kreiden fährt, «springen» diese wie von selbst an den Magneten.

Ich bin fasziniert und muss natürlich sofort Wiki fragen. Da steht dann, dass zum Beispiel Preussisch Blau aus einer Eisenmischung hergestellt wird. Und das ist, wie jeder kleine Knirps weiss, magnetisch. Aha! Schon wieder was gelernt!
